Attributions and reviews
The plate was made by a pupil according to Münz (possibly Johannes van Vliet, then completed by Rembrandt), and Singer.
White-Boon consider the plate to be reworked by Van Vliet.
States
NH lists nine states, all new except for the 1st, 6th and final state. Most other authors list three states.
In the 1st state (NH, WB, NU) the corners are rounded.
In the 2nd till 5th state (NH only) some small lines are added.
In the 6th state (NH/2nd state WB, NU) a perpendicular wrinkle is added between the eyebrows. The shadows are reworked. There are heavy left-to-right diagonals on the dark shadow on the right shoulder.
In the 7th and 8th state (NH only) again some small lines are added.
In the 9th state (NH/3rd state WB, NU) the plate is heavily reworked with crosshatching. The eyes now stare forward. There are regular right-to-left diagonals on the lower lobe of the ear, the signature is somewhat obscured.
