Catalogue Nowell-Usticke (1967): RR+, a rare attractive little portrait of Prince William II of Orange as a boy ⦿⦿⦿⦿⊙⊙
Description
It is highly unlikely that the boy shown here is indeed William of Orange, as Blanc suggested in 1859. His identification is based on a painting which was previously attributed to Rembrandt, but is now considered to be a copy after Jan Lievens.
A similar identification by Biörklund, based on an engraving by Willen Delff of 1635, seems to be more substantiated.
In the inventory list of Clement de Jonghe of 1679 a portrait of schipper Gerbrants soontje (captain Gerbrants son) is listed, which may also refer to this etching.
Copies
There are two copies in reverse. Copy A is by Thomas Worlidge (his nr 9, 99 x 63 mm, WB 2). Copy B is signed Francesco Novelli (his nr 35, two states, 132 x 89 mm, WB 1).
Attributions and reviews
The etching is considered as special by Bartsch.
States
Most authors list one state only. NH lists two states of which the 1st is ‘new’. It has heavy grain and extensive craquelure all over. It is the same impression (or ‘state’) considered by Nowell-Usticke to be a trial state. Some authors see grain on other early impressions.
Prints and collections
The 1st state (NH/trial proof a NU) is a unique impression in the British Museum.
Watermarks
In the 2nd state: Foolscap; Paschal lamb (2 ed., one 1651);

A very good contemporary impression, the sulphur-tinting and craquelure still printing well. The top corners repaired.
