Description

There is a clear likeliness with the Bald headed man, profile right (B292 – NHD 62) of the same year, which is generally considered to be a portrait of Rembrandts father, although there is little proof of that.

Copies

NH lists seven copies of which one in the same direction (copy D), by David Deuchar, with a beard, inscribed Rembrandt f. 1636 (63 x 62 mm, WB 1).
There are six copies in reverse. Copy A is by Stefano Della Bella signed SDBella (three states, 85 x 63 mm). Copy B is published by Hertel (94 x 71 mm). Copy C is by John Holland (83 x 79 mm). Copy E is anonymous, inscribed R.f. (56 x 43). Copy F is anonymous (81 x 62 mm, WB 3). Copy G is by Costantino Cumano (78 x 65 mm, WB 2).

Attributions and reviews

The plate was made by a pupil according to Coppier.
The plate is not by Rembrandt according to Singer.

States

Most authors list one state, but some (NH, Hind, Münz, and Biörklund) consider the first, unique impression as a separate state (Nowell-Usticke’s trial proof a). In their 2nd state the plate was then slightly trimmed (to 57 x 43 mm). Even early impressions are not very strong.

Prints and collections

The unique impression of the 1st state (in the Rijksmuseum) is made from a dirty plate and has rough, inky edges.

Watermarks

In the 2nd state: Arms of Wurttemberg (c. 1634-36).
